With family origins, the Ortigão Costa Group is now a global agricultural group. With a history of more than 60 years of activity in the agri-food sector, the Ortigão Costa Group aims to produce in a sustainable manner based on good agricultural practices, favouring biodiversity through specific actions and complying with international certification guidelines. Of particular note is the creation of AG-INNOV - Centro de Excelência Agrícola do Grupo Ortigão Costa (Ortigão Costa Group's Agricultural Centre of Excellence), which aims to bring about a paradigm shift in the way tomatoes are produced, increasing scientific knowledge, introducing precision technology and decision-making models to improve the management of irrigation, fertilisation and plant protection, as well as increasing the efficiency of operations, namely harvesting and transport, with a consequent reduction in costs and increase in productivity, always bearing in mind the importance of maintaining and, if possible, increasing soil fertility through the efficient use of resources. Sugal - Alimentos, S.A. ("Sugal") stands out as a world player in tomato concentrate, with five factories in Portugal, Spain and Chile. In Portugal, the company's own production represents around 10 per cent of the national production area with approximately 1,500 hectares.
